Hello, my name is Rachel and after many years of renting my husband and I bought our first home in 2011.
I grew up with a garden patch in most of the houses I lived in with dad, if the yard was big enough, a gardened went in. How dad managed to live in a terrace in Balmain is beyond me, there was no room for anything at that house. We did have a grape vine; which the local Greek man would come and buy the leaves every season for Dolmades I guess. Funny no grapes though.
It must be 'an in the Genes thing' Nana & Pop (dads parents) always had a veggie patch as well. Even when they moved from there home to built a little house out of the back of one of my Uncle's house, they had their veggie patch.
And why wouldn't you want to produce your own veggies. You know exactly what goes into them. You know they will taste better. That is something I have noticed with mass produced goods over the last few years. Everything is beginning to taste bland.
Sure there are somethings I will still buy from the greengrocer, but I really hope to reduce what I have to buy.
Needless to say there were many criteria for the place that we bought. The big one for me was somewhere I could have a garden bed. Well I got my wish. The backyard is large enough for me to have 3. I guess I could have more if i reduced their size and used more of the back yard, but 3 will suffice as it only has to feed two adults.
Each bed gets a different amount of sun due to the position of things like the house and trees needles to say.
The house is North facing (bonus) but like all backyards with north facing houses on them, the sun does cut down in the backyard, but it still gets 5-8 hours depending on the season and location.
I hope to update this each month & season.
thanks
Rachel
